Sustainable idea

The idea of giving back to nature what we take from it is important to EPA FOODS. We include sustainability in all aspects of food production and it is our explicit aim to contribute to preserving the natural resources – instead of just consuming them.  

For sustainability to get a real footing, it has to be rooted in all levels of the value chain. Sustainability must be secured in cooperation. We are a small business with major visions, and for us to make a difference requires good customers and suppliers who want to change things together with us.  

Deutsche See is, for example, one of our major partners, and through this cooperation we can make ambitious demands on sustainable actions:  

·         Stop all trade in threatened species of fish

·         Increase the purchase of fish from fish farms (aqua culture) 

·         Support the MSC label (Marine Stewardship Council) established in 1997 by WWF and Unilever in their efforts to obtain sustainable and responsible construction. 

·         Minimise discard, i.e. the part of a catch which has to be thrown back into the sea 

All our sushi packaging is based on 80% recycled plastic. This means that we reduce the emission of CO2 considerably, thus adding as little strain to the environment as possible.   

We do not accept overfishing and for example we do not use tuna for our nigiri. Our tuna rolls (Tsukiji Roll) contains the special type of tuna, ”Skipjack” (in Latin Katsuwonus Pelamis). As opposed to Bluefin tuna, Bigeye and Yellowfin tuna it is not threatened as Skipjack is not subject to overfishing. Our tuna is caught in the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, and our supplier is monitored by Earth Island Institute (EII), ensuring dolphin-friendly fishing methods. 

Our work on sustainability must never stop, and the more activities we can start, the better is our possibility of safeguarding the nature we depend on. Sustainability must never just become a good thought – it must live and breathe in the business every single day. It does so at EPA FOODS.
